Fredag 20. januar hadde vi orienteringsdag i Cape Town. Det som satte en ”stuck” i meg var District Six museet. Det oppsiktsvekkende Cape Town-museet dokumenterer apartheidtidens flytting av ”ikke-hvite” fra den sentrale bydelen District Six til avsideliggende Cape Flats. Dette prisvinnende og lokalfinansierte mueet er bygd opp på et rikt forråd av eiendeler, fotografier og minner som er donert av tvangsflyttede beboere i District Six.
/ Friday, the 20th of January we had an orientation day in Cape Town. What set a “stuck” in me was District Six Museum. The sensational Cape Town Museum documenting apartheid movement of “non-white” from the central district of District Six to remote Cape Flats. This is an award winning and locally funded museum. It has a hoard of possessions, photographs and memorabilia donated by displaced residents of District Six.
Kommunedistriktet med det prosaiske navnet ble omgjort til et område forbeholdt hvite under Group Areas Act i apartheidtiden. Museets utstillinger hyller dagliglivet slik det var i denne en gang så pulserende, raseblandede forstaden, og begråter ødeleggelsen den ble utsatt for under apartheidstyret.
/ The municipal District with the prosaic name was turned into an area reserved for whites under Group Areas Act in the apartheid era. The museum’s exhibits bins daily life as it was in this once so vibrant, race mixed suburb, and laments the destruction it suffered under the apartheid government.
Museet er muligens det aller mest gripende av de mange museene i Cape Town, og det gir en viss innsikt i den snikende innvirkningen av de rasediskriminerende forordningene som regjeringen innførte i dagliglivet til folk. I museet finner du et malt gulvkart over District Six, en barbersalong-utstilling, lydkupler og massevis av bilder, harde fakta og intervjuer med tidligere beboere.
/ The museum is possibly the most poignant of the many museums in Cape Town, and it provides some insight into the insidious influence of the racial discrimination ordinances government introduced in the daily lives of people. In the museum you will find a painted floor map of District Six, a shaving salon exhibition, lots of pictures, facts and interviews with former residents.
