Good morning MAY (or should I say afternoon?). The last week I’ve been really enthusiastic about my work with this website & my YouTube and therefore ended up pushing the boundary for when I go to bed. As a result, I now find myself in an unhealthy routine of ignoring the time and staying up too late. That’s the bad news.
The good news however, is that I’m aware of this tendency I have, and that gives me the power to change it so that it won’t turn into a sticky habit. A book that’s been a game changer for me is the Power of Habit.
CUE – ROUTINE – REWARD
This book takes us to the thrilling edge of scientific discoveries that explain why habits exists and how they can be changed. Along the way we learn why some people and companies struggle to change, despite years of trying, while others seem to remake themselves overnight.
One of my favorite parts of the book is the chapter in which the author, Charles Duhigg, describes how the right habits were crucial to the success of civil rights hero Martin Luther King Jr! The essence of the book is that habits aren’t destiny. By harnessing new science witin the field of habits, we can transform our communities and our lives! We can bloom like true human sunflowers!
TUESDAY TIP FOR THE HUMAN SUNFLOWER
Sometimes we realize that a particular habit of ours no longer serves our best interests – like I stay up late to get more done (when I actually doesn’t because I get up later the next day). At some point it may have been the best way of addressing a set of circumstances in our life, but over time it has lost its effectiveness. It has become rote behavior, an automatic response to a given situation. Do you remember that article of clothing you loved to wear when you were little? It suited you then, but it doesn’t now. Think of your habits like clothing you wear until it no longer fits you. Today, notice your habitual behavior. Ask yourself: Does this behavior serve me today? And if it doesn’t, shed it in favor of a new behavior. I will work on my sleep schedule. What will you work on?
What habit or behavior are you going to shed to instead create a new one?
PS loves: It’s Tuesday, which means I’ll email some love to those special people who sign up for my newsletter! For now I have 5 precious people. I hope there’s more people who’s into personal growth + lifestyle design out there? If so, join!
